Abstract:
The Sri Lankan maritime sector has grown in tandem with the world’s increasing
demand for maritime trade. Therefore, it is essential to adopt sustainable
practices to mitigate the adverse effects on Sri Lanka. This study examines the
current sustainable practices employed by Sri Lanka’s shipping industry,
including the processes involved in their implementation and the key challenges
hindering their broader adoption. It emphasises the importance of sustainable
innovations in enhancing operational efficiency, reducing environmental
impact, and ensuring long-term industry resilience. The study employs an
interpretivist research paradigm, utilising semi-structured interviews with key
stakeholders and thematic analysis. This approach helps to evaluate the
sustainability measures currently in practice, their implementation processes,
and the challenges hindering broader adoption. The findings indicate that Sri
Lankan shipping companies are progressively implementing green initiatives
such as AI-driven route optimization, paperless Administration, electric
vehicles, and renewable energy solutions. These measures not only reduce waste
and carbon emissions but also enhance operational efficiency. However,
challenges such as high initial costs, regulatory uncertainty, and a lack of
technological expertise impede widespread adoption. This research contributes
to existing literature by addressing the gap in studies on sustainable practices in
Sri Lanka’s shipping industry. It underscores the necessity of strong policy
frameworks and financial incentives to encourage environmentally responsible
investments and technological advancements. The study further emphasises the
importance of stakeholder collaboration in overcoming financial and regulatory
constraints, providing insights into the perspectives of government bodies,
industry leaders, and small-scale operators within the shipping industry. The
insights presented in this study serve as valuable guidance for policymakers and
maritime stakeholders, facilitating a resilient and sustainable shipping industry
that balances business viability with environmental responsibility.
